If you happen to be on O‘ahu tomorrow (17 April 2009), and are looking for an inexpensive evening out, you might wish to check out the Honolulu Community Concert Band’s Spring Concert at the McKinley High School auditorium.

The Band, at the moment, consists of around 75 musicians, most of whom do something else for a living. I know, this is not particularly unusual; hell, the Honolulu Symphony musicians are doing that these days.

But Your Amoeba has a special place in his ectoplasm for community bands. They hearken back to the years BiP (Before iPod), when all music was, by definition, live, and if you, your family, your town wished some, you made it yourself. And this band, he suggests, is better than most of the others in its class.

In spite of the protozoon fumbling around somewhere in the brass section.
